High Resolution Aeromagnetics as an Aid to Structural Interpretation Over the Muturi PSC, Irian Jaya

Neil A. W. Moig

Abstract

Between August and November 1993, British Gas acquired a 'High Resolution' aeromagnetic survey over the Muturi PSC in Irian Jaya, Eastern Indonesia. The objectives of the survey were threefold:

1) To acquire a cost effective data set over the whole block that would allow investigation in areas lacking seismic coverage.

2) To delineate structural trends within both the basement and intrasedimentary section in order to help constrain ambiguous structural interpretations obtained from poor quality seismic data.

3) To perform 2D and 3D modelling across prospective structures.

The survey aimed to maximise resolution by acquiring data with a 500m × 1500m line spacing and a mean terrain clearance of 80m. Data was sampled every 7- 8m with a resolution of 0.001nT, and a systems noise of less than 0.2nT.

The results were excellent, and allowed resolution of lineaments and domains within both the basement and intrasedimentary section. Strong NE-SW and NW-SE trends were shown to be fundamental structural elements controlling the distribution of features within the Mesozoic and younger sections.
