Integrating Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Logging Data with Traditional Down Hole Petrophysical Data to Optimize New Development Wells Strategies in the Bravo Field Offshore North West Java, ARCO Indonesia PSC

Abstract

Log interpretation in the Main and Massive sands of the Offshore North West Java (ONWJ) PSC has been difficult due to a number of environmental and geologic reasons. Our field studies, which include incorporating core data, indicate that much of the rock has abundant microporosity along with the macroporosity and some clay minerals. These combined features cause high water saturation on calculated log intervals which are often referred to as "low resistivity pay". The water is often capillary bound and will not be produced during normal production methods. Coupling this problem with drilling of infill wells in areas of current production and water influx gives you a formation evaluation headache.

Our solution, to the interpretation problem, was to run a Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Tool. The tool demonstrated its usefulness in the BM-3 pilot well. The tool proved conclusively that the B-28C hydrocarbon interval is at irreducible water saturation and would not produce water upon initial production. With this answer in hand, the Project Team drilled a 1500' horizontal section in the B-28C interval. The well flowed 1200 BOPD with no water at 300 PSI FTP on a 1/2" choke.
