Applications of Hydraulic Fracturing to Increase Oil Production in Tanjung Field, Kalimantan, Indonesia

Abstract

This paper presents the result of successful applications of hydraulic fracturing to increase oil production in a mature sandstone formation in the Tanjung Field, South Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Production comparisons show an improvement in well performance following hydraulic fracturing. A well case study is presented, including a discussion of the fracturing program methodology.

Tanjung Field is an old field, with very low pressure prior to initiating a waterflood. Based on a reservoir simulation study there is still significant oil remaining to be recovered. However, the zones with the highest remaining reserves have very low permeability. Artificial channels with hydraulic fracturing are needed to allow the oil to flow more effectively and efficiently. The larger area of the formation, exposed to the fracture system, will provide a larger drainage area and allow the reservoir fluids to flow more easily.

Tanjung Field, with 125 wells (107 well existing and 18 well newly drilled), still has high potential for optimizing recovery. Hydraulic fracturing treatments have been performed since late 1996, with a significant oil gain.
