Case Histories: In-Situ Polymerized Gel System Successfully used as an Alternative to Squeeze Cementing

Abstract

In this Indonesian East Kalimantan field, most of the completions are dual string. Previously, to accomplish a short-string recompletion, operators were required to (1) mobilize a rig, (2) pull both completion strings out of the hole, (3) run in the hole with a retrievable packer and retrievable bridge plug, (4) squeeze off the perforations with cement, (5) retrieve the bridge plug, (6) perforate the new zone, then (7) run the completion string.

Because of the exorbitant costs and demanding logistics involved, a more cost-effective and viable alternative has been found to facilitate short-string recompletions. This paper describes how (1) short-string perforations were squeezed off on two wells with an organically crosslinked monomer (in-situ polymer) gelation system, and (2) new zones were perforated without having to recover the completion string.
