Cost Effective Seismic Acquisition and Drilling in the Fold Thrust Belt of Papua New Guinea and Implications for Exploration in Irian Jaya

R. J. Schroder, B. McConachie, T. Surka

Abstract

The acquisition of good quality seismic data over areas of rugged karst topography in Papua New Guinea ("PNG") has the potential to significantly reduce structural risk and improve exploration success. Innovative project management has resulted in good quality seismic data at a cost significantly lower than previous surveys over similar terrain, achieved world-class safety performance and has proven beneficial in the evaluation of subsurface structures in the fold thrust belt of PNG. Experience gained by Santos Asia Pacific Pty Ltd ("Santos") in this environment can be applied to similar terrain conditions in Indonesia and adds considerable value to the exploration effort through risk and cost reduction.
