Abstract
Enhancement of Field Development Practices with Geostatistical Reservoir Modeling at Minas Field, Central Sumatra
Abstract
PT Caltex Pacific Indonesia (CPI) extracts tremendous business value by using a multidisciplinary approach in the construction and evaluation of geocellular reservoir models. This paper features the application of our reservoir characterization workflow to the Minas field by a cross-functional team of engineers and earth scientists. Decisions based on our approach affect near-term (infill wells, workovers), mid-term (evaluation of waterflood optimization alternatives) and long-term (delineation of targets for potential tertiary recovery programs) development strategies.
The reservoir characterization workflow relies on the interaction of individuals with key skills in the areas of structural geology, sequence stratigraphy, petrophysics, geostatistics, reservoir engineering and flow simulation. Each of these disciplines provides guidance, insight and constraint to the various modeling processes during the application of the workflow. This paper describes some of the ways in which the interaction between the key disciplines yields better products upon which to base reservoir development decisions.
During the course of the work, additional workflows were developed to interrogate the geocellular model for the purposes of defining OOIP uncertainty, waterflood optimization and pattern review and visualizing the distribution of remaining reserves.
Caltex' Immersive Visualization and Communication Center (IVCC) is extensively used throughout the process. The IVCC is an extremely effective forum for the characterization team to execute and quality check the reservoir modeling workflow, as well as for the field development teams to work with the result and make rapid, informed decisions.
As a result of the interactive, multi-disciplinary approach, the geologic and flow simulation models constitute the most accurate representations of the static and dynamic condition of the reservoir. Coupling these models with the use of the IVCC leads to improved understanding of field performance and adds value to CPI and our partners.
