Use of Sequence Stratigraphy in Carbonate Exploration: Sunda Basin, Java Sea, Indonesia

P. Wicaksono, A. W. R. Wight, W. R. Lodwick, R. E. Netherwood, B. Budiarto, D. Hanggoro

Abstract

In the Sunda basin, western Java Sea (Maxus, SE Sumatra PSC), cumulative production from Lower Miocene Batu Raja Formation and Gumai Formation shallow marine limestones has totaled nearly 250 MMBO, from seven fields. Despite several small discoveries in recent years, accumulations found have not been commercial due mainly to unpredictable, often poor reservoir quality, limited areal extent, or low recovery factors. A detailed sequence stratigraphic study of the carbonates was therefore undertaken to produce a predictive model for porosity development, and to define stratigraphic controls for play generation.
