Complimentary Role of Seismic and Well Data in Identifying Upper Talang Akar Stratigraphic Sequences — Widuri Field Area, Asri Basin

Abstract

Four parasequences in the uppermost Talang Akar formation provide the framework for exploitation of shallower hydrocarbon reservoirs in Widuri Field, Asri Basin, offshore Southeast Sumatra. The four units occur within an interval 130 - 175 ft thick at 3000 -3,500 ft subsea, the relatively shallow depths presenting advantages for seismic resolution. Well logs, core data and biostratigraphic information combine to define parasequence bounding surfaces and facies in this interval. Seismic amplitude patterns, mapped from 3D seismic, complement the well data and show spatial features of the depositional systems not otherwise possible. The parasequences formed within a marginal marine setting on a low energy coastal margin flanking the Miocene Java Sea. Flooding surfaces identified in the deltaic-estuarine and shallow marine sediments are thought to result from low amplitude sea-level changes in the early Miocene, but autocyclic origins for the parasequences are not excluded. Shallower sand bodies represent abandonment facies, most likely from backfilling of channels cut during inferred sea-level falls. The integrated interpretation of well data and seismic amplitude trends has led to success in most of the recent wells drilled to develop these shallow reservoirs.
