Pre-Tertiary Basement – The New Objective for Oil and Gas Exploration and Production in the Continental Shelf of South Vietnam

Ngo Thuong San, Nguyen Giao, Tran Le Dong, Hoang Phuoc Son

Abstract

Geological and geophysical data, as well as the results of exploration and production activity over the past 30 years, show that the basement of the continental shelf of South Vietnam consists of granitic rocks of Early Cretaceous-Late Jurassic age (from 97 up to 178 m.y). These rocks formed in two phases: the early phase is composed of granodiorite, the late phase consists of granite.

The presence of fracture zones, solution-enhanced fractures with different directions and sizes, together with the influence of processes such as tectonic, hydrothermal, reactivation of magmatism, and weathering, has caused the basement of the continental shelf of South Vietnam to become an important oil bearing reservoir.

This paper presents information on the tectonic evolution, the distribution of traps, the characteristics of seal and reservoir rocks, and the distribution and characteristics of oil and gas source rocks in the studied area.

The oil discoveries in the Bach Ho, Rong (Block 09), Ruby (Block 01), and Rang Dong (Block 15-2) Fields prove the pre-Tertiary basement as a new non-traditional objective for oil exploration and production in the continental shelf of South Vietnam.
