A RECORRELATION OF MIOCENE FORMATIONS IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Abstract

The island of Hispaniola is divided into two republics, Haiti to the west and the Dominican Republic to the east (see Fig. 1). The island lies on the point of convergence of two major structural trends, the northern trend, the Cordillera Central--Massif du Nord, is composed of andesites, quartz diorities and tectonised Eocene. It strikes westwards through the Sierra Maestre of SE Cuba, on through Cayman and into the Maya uplift of southern Belize. It is commonly referred to as the Maya--Cayman ridge. some Tertiary beds in the Antillean region are being perpetuated.
