Abstract

Turbidites are generally deep-sea deposits. By contrast, the turbidites which form a large part of the nearly 1000 m Quaternary section, cored in well CNR Venice 1, do not seem to have been deposited at sea depths much greater than 200 m. Sea depth. determined mostly by ecological analyses of foraminifera, gradually decreased as the basin was filled with sediments. In the upper part of the well, above 302 m, turbidite sedimentation was replaced by alternating fluviatile and very shallow marine deposition.
