OIL AND GAS OCCURRENCES ON THE EAST-EUROPEAN PLATFORM AS RELATED TO ITS TECTONIC HISTORY

Abstract

Phanerozoic deposits on the East-European platform are represented by four megasequences: Lower Paleozoic, Middle-Upper Paleozoic, Mesozoic and Cenozoic. Each megacycle includes several depositional cycles. A correlation may be established between the distribution of oil and gas source rocks and commercial production and the depositional and geotectonic megacycles and cycles. The formation of major gasfields (Orenburg, Shebelinka, Astrakhan and Vuktyl) during the periods of upward tectonic movement is discussed.
