Natural gas is now one of the most important sources of primary energy in the European economy and will continue to be so in the foreseeable future. In 1967, the Committee on Gas of the Economic Commission for Europe (United Nations, Geneva) arranged for the setting up of a small group of experts to prepare an international map of the then-known European gasfields. This map was published in 1972 by the Committee on Gas and the Bundesanstalt fur Bodenforschung (now known as the Bundesanstalt fur Geowissenschaften und Rohstoff (BGR) or the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources) in Hannover. Explanatory notes accompanying this map were also published.
