FIELD-SIZE DISTRIBUTION--AN EXERCISE IN DOODLING?

G. D. Hobson*

* 7, St. John s Avenue, Ewell, Surrey KT17 3BE.

AUFMAN (1963) plotted field size against cumulative percentage of fields on log-probability paper for oilfields in North Louisiana, and obtained a close approximation to a straight line--suggesting a log-normal distribution. Comparable plots for fields in a number of formations in Western Canada yielded less perfect examples of log-normal distributions (Kaufman et al., 1975) .Other workers have proposed log-normal distributions for field sizes. Magara (1986) gives data on the sizes of "giant" oil- and gasfields World-wide.
