Aberdeen University's Department of Geology and Petroleum Geology offers Designated (three years) and Honours (four years) degrees combining Geology and Petroleum Geology, as well as Joint Honours courses in which Petroleum Geology is combined with another subject. The first two years provide a sound basis for advanced courses in Geology and Petroleum Geology, with Computer Science one of the possibilities. In the 3rd Year, subjects include petroleum geology, geotectonics, sedimentology, reservoir diagenesis, and geochemistry. The 4th Year includes petroleum geophysics, applied sedimentary geology, petroleum geology, organic geochemistry, petrophysics and basin analysis. Independent project work provides opportunities, in collaboration with industry, for a wide range of Petroleum Geology-related experience, current student numbers in Years 1, 2, 3 and 4 are 60, 34, 14 and 14, respectively.
