"THE AGE OF SALT IN THE GULF OF MEXICO BASIN" -- REPLY

In his discussion of my 1993 paper, Hossack (1994) presented the BP and Exxon interpretation of the mode of emplacement of salt at different levels in Tertiary sediments on the north side of the Gulf of Mexico Basin. This interpretation ascribes salt emplacement to repetitive extrusion of Jurassic salt onto the sea bed in the form of salt glaciers. This concept differs from Shell's interpretation of salt nappes (Worrall and Snelson, 1989) as well as Texaco's and Amoco's preference for salt sills (Liro, 1992; Spencer and Sharpe, 1993). All these interpretations and many others accept, as a basic premise, that all the salt is Jurassic.
