POST-JURASSIC TECTONISM IN THE WEST SIBERIAN BASIN, RUSSIA

Abstract

The sedimentary fill of the West Siberian Basin records an episode of rifting from Late Permian to Middle Jurassic times, followed by post-rift subsidence from the Late Jurassic onwards. The rifting process initiated the regional arches on which many of the basins and gasfields are located. This paper presents data from regional seismic lines that demonstrate that the searches were not quiescent throughout the post-rift phase but grew in relative elevation during the Cretaceous and into the Cenozoic. This post-Jurassic growth is attributed to continuing or renewed extension in the basin.
