CENOZOIC MARKER BEDS OF SOUTHERN IDAHO
ABSTRACT
Increasing petroleum exploration in southern Idaho demands a better knowledge and understanding of Cenozoic stratigraphy of the area This is essential to good surface mapping and structural interpretation. Eight excellent distinct marker beds help to accomplish this goal. Black basalt interbedded with fluvial beds mark the Snake River Basalt section. Yellowing gray homogeneous silty clay marks the Glenns Ferry Formation. Oolitic limestone marks the top of the Chalk Hill Formation. A bright red volcanic ash marks the top of the Poison Creek Formation. Reddish brown massive rhyolite identifies the Owyhee Rhyolite. Three distinct units in this order mark the Succor Creek Formation-lignitic shale and black sapropelite near the top followed by a bright green volcanic ash, then a snow white ashy shale and porcelenite. All these markers are both distinct and unique.
