VAN HORN PEAK-A WELDED TUFF VENT IN CENTRAL IDAHO

E.B. Ekren, U.S. Geological Survey, Box 25046, Federal Center, Denver, CO 80225

ABSTRACT

Geologic mapping by the U.S. Geological Survey in the northeastern part of the Challis 1°x2° quadrangle in Idaho has disclosed a multiple cauldron complex centered at about lat. 44°42' N. and long. 114°32' W. Uplift of the cauldron complex, coupled with deep erosion both within and outside the complex, has exposed a welded tuff feeder vent forming Van Horn Peak—a prominent and scenic landmark in the Challis area The Van Horn Peak vent is nearly circular in plan view and is about 1 6 km in diameter The vent cuts a variety of intracauldron tuffs, debris flows, and lacustrine strata. The feeder gave rise to at least two sequences of ash-flow tuff belonging to the Challis Volcanics that are approximately 46 m.y. old.
