MONTANA (BILLINGS) GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY: 1949-1989 THE FIRST FORTY YEARS

L. D. 'Vern' Hunter, Consulting Geologist, Billings, Montana

ABSTRACT

The Montana Geological Society (originally the Billings Geological Society) was first conceived on September 30,1949, when neighboring geological societies were first contacted for procedural information. Our first organizational meeting was held on February 28, 1950. The objectives of the society as stated in the By-Laws are "to promote interest and research in geology and allied sciences and their application and to encourage fellowship and cooperation among members." These objectives have been and are still being met as evidenced in part by the many highly valued Guidebooks and Symposia that have been published. A list of publications is included along with the charter members, past presidents, honorary members and special awardees.

Total membership is presented graphically and can be readily correlated with the upturns and downturns of industry activity as well as the price of oil. Significant mileposts, contributions, expenditures and traditions are briefly outlined. The many hours of effort contributed by countless unnamed volunteers is responsible for the achievements of the past, where the MGS is today and where it will be in the future.
