Hydrogeochemical Characterization of Formation Waters Using Ionic Ratios, South-Central Saskatchewan
ABSTRACT
Formation waters from Paleozoic and Mesozoic strata in south-central Saskatchewan were separated into three population groups by plotting the ratio of the reacting concentrations of sodium to chloride (rNa+:rCl-). The evolved meteoric waters of Group I, are found throughout the region in shallow horizons and in the western portions of deep horizons that are affected by surface recharge. Group II are connate or ancient evolved waters. These waters are found in the southeastern portion of the study area in the deepest part of the basin. Group III waters are limited to specific horizons in direct contact with evaporite salts. They represent Group I or II waters that have been altered by rapid dissolution of halite. Hydrocarbons are associated with Group II waters, preferentially accumulating along the boundary between Group II and Group I waters.
