Madden Field: A Growing Giant in the Wind River Basin, Wyoming

Connie M. Hawkins, Ronald A. Baugh

Abstract

Madden Field is located in the northeast corner of the Wind River Basin in Fremont and Natrona counties, Wyoming. The discovery well for the field was drilled in 1968 by Wolf Exploration Company based largely on a geologic interpretation made by Bill Barrett. Now nearly 40 years later, Madden is still a growing giant gas field and continues to provide a fascinating study in science, excitement of the hunt, and human nature as it grows into robust middle age.
