GEOLOGIC CONTROLS OF COAL BURNS AND OXIDIZED ZONES IN THE ANTELOPE COAL FIELD, CONVERSE COUNTY, WYOMING

ABSTRACT

Burns and oxidized zones are found in the Anderson seam and locally in the Canyon seam of the Antelope coal field of Northeastern Wyoming. The burns are most prominent where rolls in the Anderson seam intersect late Tertiary and Quaternary stream channels. The controls on the extent and occurrence of burns and oxidized zones within the coal are 1) rolls within the seam, 2) exposure by stream erosion, 3) position of the paleowater table, and 4) thickness of bedrock overburden. Oxidized zones within the coal seams and clinker deposits are characterized by flat bottoms that are believed to have resulted from slow oxidation or burning of the coal to the level of the water table that existed at the time. Subsequent alluviation of the stream-eroded valley concealed portions of the clinker deposits and oxidized coal zones within part of the Antelope coal field.
