ABSTRACT

The Devonian of the United States portion of the Williston Basin can be divided into basinwide correlative formations. Over a period of time a workable stratigraphic nomenclature has evolved from outcrop studies and subsurface data.

Devonian strata are represented by a carbonate and evaporite section deposited in a subsiding basin by a transgressing sea. Preliminary paleontological evidence indicates that units of upper and middle Devonian age are present. Post-Devonian uplift resulted in truncation of the upper beds on the periphery of the basin and locally denuded Devonian over portions of the Cedar Creek Anticline.

Commercial production has been indicated by Devonian tests on the Nesson Anticline; in addition, oil shows in widely-separated exploratory wells gives evidence of future undeveloped potentialities.
