THE EARTH'S CRUST UNDER THE WILLISTON BASIN IN EASTERN SASKATCHEWAN AND WESTERN MANITOBA

ABSTRACT

Lines A, B, and C of the Canadian Co-Crust 1979 refraction experiment have been analysed in detail using synthetic seismogram techniques. Line A ran north-south mainly in the boundary zone of the Nelson Front in Manitoba; Line B was parallel to Line A but farther west in eastern Saskatchewan; Line C ran east-west crossing the southern end of Line B. Lines B and C were in the Williston Basin.

The crustal model derived from first arrivals was considerably improved by computing synthetic seismograms and matching them against the record sections. Correspondence between synthetic and actual sections was good. The crust in the Williston Basin is very thick (48 km) and includes a thick, high velocity (7.1-7.6 km/sec) lower crust. The upper mantle has a higher velocity (8.3-8.5 km/sec).
