Oils from Simpson Reservoirs on the Central Basin Platform

Hugh N. Frenzel

Abstract

The study of Simpson oil is based on 19 samples from 16 pools. These oils are divided on the basis of their chemical analyses into four groups. Groups 1 through 3 are very similar and are indigenous to the Simpson strata. These rocks are also the source for the protected Ellenburger reservoirs. Group 4 Simpson oils are believed to be mixtures of Simpson oil with younger oils and are found in traps along the pre-Permian unconformity and along major faults. Simpson and Ellenburger oils are notable for their high paraffinic content and low δC13 content.
