Successfully Permitting and Operating Injection and Disposal Wells

Bruce G. Langhus

ABSTRACT

Oklahoma's oil and gas industry depends on efficient handling of produced salt water. The two subsurface options - injection and disposal - are both regulated by the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Obtaining an injection/disposal permit, via an OCC Order, is a highly technical procedure. Not only are there several engineering requirements to protect ground water resources, but older, nearby, mud-plugged boreholes have to be reconciled before an order can be issued. Operation of the injection/ disposal well must include periodic testing and reporting for the well to remain in compliance. Failure to remain in compliance can result in fines, enforced plugging and even considerable environmental liability.
