Miocene Paleobathymetric Changes of the Santa Rosa-Cortes Ridge Area, California Continental Borderland

Robert E. Arnal

Abstract

Paleoecologic criteria and Miocene foraminiferal assemblages characteristic of littoral to abyssal biofacies provide the basis for determining paleo-bathymetric conditions of the Santa Rosa-Cortes Ridge area. Only a few early Miocene assemblages have been collected, and therefore, the paleobathymetry for that time is not well known. More middle Miocene assemblages are available and suggest the existence of a rising crest several tens of kilometres long. Late Miocene assemblages of the early Mohnian stage indicate a continuation of the uplift, whereas late Mohnian assemblages mark a reversal and the onset of a subsidence phase that continued into early Pliocene time. Rates of uplift and subsidence for the Santa Rosa-Cortes Ridge area are established by estimating the bathymetric changes from early to middle, to late Miocene time.
