Transverse Faulting and Gas Prospects in Basement of the Freeport Area, Southeast Sacramento Basin

Lowell E. Garrison

Abstract

The Freeport Fault is an important east-west trending fracture in the Freeport-Elk Grove area, Sacramento County. Its vertical displacement (> 500′ down to the north) offsets Basement and the Upper Cretaceous Forbes Formation and influences Forbes sedimentation. Not cut in any well, the fault can be traced by interpretive data for twelve miles. Structural and stratigraphic complexities related to this fault are an exploration opportunity, and the area is the site of authentic Basement gas shows.
