Geological Abstracts: SCIENTIFIC MANPOWER AND NATIONAL SAFETY

B. F. Hake

During the last fifteen years the Soviet Union has extended her domination over six hundred million people of other nations. She has vast resources and is irrevocably dedicated to world domination. Her progress in field of education and in industrial and military development have been phenomenal. Today she menaces the rest of the world more ominously than Germany and her axis associates ever did.

Since the United States presents the most serious opposition encountered by the Soviet, she may someday decide to attack us. Our best means of preventing war is to maintain the capacity to meet any aggression with an immediate and decisive counterattack.

Maintenance of the superlative fighting forces that are required for our national safety will involve a gigantic effort on our part, especially in the vital fields of scientific research and development, where a severe shortage of qualified personnel already imperils the nation.

In making this effort, we need to alter immediately our laws regulating military service, in ways designed to cause every man to serve his country in the capacity in which he can be of greatest value.

Additionally, we need to improve the teaching of science and mathematics in our high schools and to stimulate student interest in scientific and technological careers.

These vital matters deserve the earnest attention of every citizen because the making of the requisite changes will probably require the pressure of informed and aroused public opinion.
