Abstract
Chapter 2: Bring in the Rigs
Abstract
Activity in the Cretaceous Niobrara play is rapidly expanding, as operators fan out to test the oil-prone shale in several Rockies basins (Fig. 1). From the strong results reported in northern Colorado’s Denver-Julesburg Basin, leasing and drilling activity has spread across the basin and now stretches from southern Wyoming down into Wattenberg Field. The Powder River, Piceance, Sand Wash, and North Park basins are sites of additional exploration. The broad expanse of the Niobrara Formation means that firms of all sizes have room to work, and the number of companies attracted to the play has burgeoned.
