The Relation Between the Size of Previous HitWaveNext Hit-Formed Ripple Marks, Depth of Water, and the Size of the Generating Waves

O. F. Evans

ABSTRACT

The size of Previous HitwaveNext Hit-formed ripple marks depends on the depth of water and the size of the generating waves. With waves of a given size, the deeper the water the smaller the ripple marks; with a given depth of water, the smaller the waves, the smaller the size of the ripple marks. Certain tank experiments and field observations are described which led to the above conclusions. Since the Previous HitwaveTop size and the depth of water are variables, and the ratio between these two variables also varies, it is impossible to determine from the size of fossil ripple marks the depth of water under which they were formed.
