Synthesis of Sand Mixtures

Henry W. Menard, Jr.

ABSTRACT

A method is offered for synthesizing sand mixtures with a normal probability size-frequency distribution, and any desired mean and sorting. Tables and a graph permit rapid use of the method for certain phi standard deviations and for any phi mean diameter. Graphical and mathematical solutions are also presented so that any normal sand may be mixed.

NOTATION

Cs = coefficient of sorting
M = mean diameter
Md = median diameter
M^phgr =phi mean diameter
M^phgrn = nominal phi mean diameter
Q1 = larger quartile
Q3 = smaller quartile
^phgr = -log2 n, where n is the grain size in millimeters. If M^phgr1 = M^phgr2+^phgr, then M1 = 2 M2
^sgr^phgr = phi standard deviation
