Grain Orientation in Sands and Sandstones

W. Schwarzacher

ABSTRACT

A method for measuring three-dimensional shape orientation of sand grains is described. Sediments were deposited under different experimental conditions. Fabric studies of these sediments reveal two types of orientation, one caused by high and one by low rates of deposition. In some cases it may prove possible to discriminate between wind and water deposition, but no satisfactory way was found of describing such slightly differing fabric patterns in numerical terms.
