Abstract
Illite And Montmorillonite In Green Sedimentary Rocks
W. D. Keller
ABSTRACT
The green constituents of ordinary sedimentary rocks are present commonly in the clay-sized fraction. They were identified in representative green sedimentary rocks as members of the illite and montmorillonite clay mineral groups.
The nature of combination of both ferric and ferrous iron should be recognized when relating iron and mineral color. Ferric silicates in sedimentary minerals are greenish, whereas ferric oxides are red, yellow, and brown.
