A Modified Kullenberg Piston Corer

G. R. Emery, D. E. Broussard

ABSTRACT

The experience of Shell Exploration and Production Research Laboratory with a modified Kullenberg piston corer indicates that in the sediments recovered by piston corers considerable contamination call result from flushing action caused by movement of the piston during recovery and from sloshing of watery sediments in bringing the core aboard horizontally. Modifications by this laboratory in the design of the instrument and in its method of operation have largely eliminated these two causes of contamination; other modifications have been made in the instrument which somewhat increase its ease of operation.
