The Petrology of the Vincentown Formation

Seymour Oscar Schlanger (1)

ABSTRACT

The Eocene Vincentown formation, located in the Coastal Plain of New Jersey, is a quartzose. bryozoa and foraminifera rich limesand. The thickness of the formation is variable, ranging from a minimum of 18 feet to a known maximum of 460 feet. The Vincentown formation is the transgressive phase of a marine cycle involving the underlying Hornerstown formation as the initial regressive phase and the overlying Manasquan formation as the final regressive phase. A sub-tropical climate prevailed in the area during the deposition of the Vincentown. The source rocks of the Vincentown formation were crystalline metamorphics, reworked Coastal Plain formations, and Paleozoic rocks.
