Abstract
Abrasion Effects on Arkose Mixtures
william J. Morris, Pow-foong Fan (2)
ABSTRACT
Mixtures of quartz and potash feldspar grains, varying in size, were placed in a group of oscillating tubes for a maximum of 30 hours. The samples were analyzed at 10 hour intervals and weight loss computed for each component.
It was found that abrasion rate changes with different size combinations of quartz-feldspar components. Abrasion was significant in some mixtures which contained relative sizes normally found in nature.
The theoretical effect of abrasion on a hypothetical sediment is considered, based upon the experimental evidence. It appears reasonable that abrasion, when considered as occurring along with other size reduction factors, is of considerable importance.
