Abstract
Clay Minerals in Sediments from Sydney Harbour, Australia
R. E. Grim, F. C. Loughnan (2)
ABSTRACT
Sediments from Sydney Harbour contain, as clay mineral components, kaolinite, illite, a mineral with a 14 A periodicity having iron as the major interlayer cation, and mixed-layer assemblages. On passage from the fresh water environment of the Lane Cove and Parramatta Rivers into the harbour, the interlayer ferric iron is reduced and the 14 A mineral becomes degraded. Illite develops in the marine environment from the degraded material.
