Staining and Etching Techniques for Studying Obscure Structures in Clastic Rocks

Wm. Kenneth Hamblin

ABSTRACT

Many obscure or invisible structures in clastic rocks may be accentuated by selectively staining accessory clay minerals with Alizarin Red or by etching out structural planes by light sand blasting. The main advantages of these techniques are (1) they are simple and do not require expensive equipment and (2) they supplement each other and are effective over a wide range of rock types.
