Systematic Fractionation of Sand in the Shallow Marine and Beach Environment Off the South African Coast

ABSTRACT

Shallow marine sediments from the South African coasts are characteristically deficient in sand of about 1/4 mm (2 phi) diameter, and their size distribution cumulatives possess an inflexion point at 2 phi which reflects the bimodality of the material. Characteristics of lognormal components of these sediments are considered to be influenced by the Stokes and Impact settling velocity laws, and the differential removal of the 2 phi component is thought to be due either to an increased susceptibility to erosion of material of this size or to a two stage fractionation process which first concentrates the component on the beach and then removes it by on-shore wind action.
