Abstract
Graphical Aids for Determining Reliability of Sample Means and an Adequate Sample Size
John M. Dennison
ABSTRACT
Graphs are presented to determine 0.95 and 0.99 confidence probability limits for sample means. A plot of Stein's two-stage sampling function can be used to ascertain graphically the sample size necessary for a specified reliability of the sample mean. This method can be applied to cyclical distributions. An improved technique enables an observer in the field to approximate the reliability of his sample mean and to estimate the total sample size needed for calculating the population mean with a desired degree of precision.
