Convolute Lamination, its Origin, Preservation, and Directional Significance

Stanislaw Dzulynski, Alec J. Smith

ABSTRACT

Convolute lamination or convolute bedding occurs in marine and non-marine sediments deposited in many environments. Current convolute laminations found in turbidite deposits are accounted for by the forces known to exist in turbidity currents. The convolutions are a fossil record of the forces which acted upon a laminated bed during its sedimentation. The directional significance of the structure is also discussed. Other convolutions seem to be caused by loading. A variety of such convolute bedding structures is described and origins are suggested.
