Abstract
Origin and Age of the Sandstone Reefs of Pernambuco (Northeastern Brazil)
J. M. Mabesoone
ABSTRACT
Several lines of sandstone reefs occur along the NE coast of Brazil. These sandstones have been studies at the coast of Pernambuco. Their grain size composition, and morphometrical and morphoscopical sand grain character was compared with those of river sediments and other coastal deposits. The granulometric character of the reef sandstones suggests an origin as offshore sands. Their macroscopic character, however, is typically that of beach rock, as is illustrated by a reef actually being formed. So the presumed origin of the sandstones is beach rock, but later changed in grain size composition by addition of finer material. Their age must be Recent, as a consequence of the Holocene sea level rise, every line representing a temporary still-stand.
