Abstract
Cementation and Compaction of the Millstone Grit of the Central Pennines, England
Michael D. Wright
ABSTRACT
The extent of compaction of arenaceous sediments in the Millstone Grit (Namurian) rocks of the Central Pennine Carboniferous has been estimated by determining the extent to which quartz grains are in contact with one another in thin sections. Where clay is present it reduces the number of grain contacts. It is estimated that sandstones and siltstones from the Middle Grit Group near Holmfirth, Yorkshire, have been compacted to about two-thirds of their deposited thickness.
