Dolomite-Calcite Relationships in Sea Water: Theoretical Considerations and Preliminary Experimental Results

ABSTRACT

Theoretical considerations show that pH values of carbonates in equilibrium with sea water bear a close relationship to their solubility, and accordingly, to their relative stability. The results of preliminary experiments suggested by this reasoning indicate that sea water in contact with calcite is undersaturated with respect to dolomite. Formation of dolomite can be brought about as a consequence of one of the following factors, or a combination thereof: high temperature, high chlorinity, presence of aragonite or Mg-calcite, and an increase of the Mg/Ca ratio in the solutions.
