Abstract
Subaqueously Formed Shrinkage Cracks in Clay
J. F. Burst
ABSTRACT
The presence of mud cracks in rocks is usually considered by geologists as evidence of air drying during a period of surface exposure. Current laboratory experiments with argillaceous materials show, however, that some mud cracks may be generated in elastic deposits containing montmorillonite during period of uninterrupted water cover principally by increasing the salinity of the aqueous millieu. An alternate interpretation is offered therefore for the origin of mud cracks in geologic strata.
