Abstract
Porcellanite in the Mishash Formation, Negev, Southern Israel
Y. Kolodny, Y. Nathan, E. Sass
ABSTRACT
The occurrence of porcellanite (FOOTNOTE 2) beds in the Mishash Formation (Campanian) of Israel is described. This porcellanite is composed for the most part of opal and is highly porous.
It is believed that the porcellanite was formed by diagenetic processes in an environment of semi-closed basins, bordered by a continent of low relief, under tropical climatic conditions.
pH is thought to have been the determining factor in the formation of opal or quartz.
