Abstract
Arithmetic Means of Circular Data
William H. Wood, Rhoda M. Wood
ABSTRACT
A circular arithmetic mean of n points y1, y2,..., yn lying on the circumference of the unit circle is defined to be a point z; the algebraic sum of whose deviations on either side of a diameter passing through z is zero. A method is given for finding such means, illustrated by a geologic example. Some sample-descriptive characteristics of the circular arithmetic and of the vector mean are compared. Implications of the choice of measure of central tendency and of the transformation of variate are considered.
