Color Variations within Glacial Till, East-central North Dakota--A Preliminary Investigation

T. E. Kelly, Claud H. Baker, Jr.

ABSTRACT

Anamolous color variations (orange zones within normally buff-colored till) in the drift in east-central North Dakota were analyzed to determine their origin. Statistical analyses, pebble counts, and selected chemical analyses indicate the presence of two tills. Mean size and standard deviation show a greater difference between the two tills than do skewness and kurtosis. There is a distinct difference in number and type of pebbles in the tills, but partial chemical analyses of the tills do not differ appreciably. It is concluded that blocks of an older till were picked up by and incorporated into the last glacier moving across the area. The blocks of older till were moved en masse and were redeposited in a matrix of younger till.
